Instagram is one of the free, online picture-sharing apps and social network platforms Facebook acquired in 2012. Both Facebook and Instagram are under Meta, a newly acknowledged name for the Facebook company.

Instagram allows its users to edit and upload photos and short videos. They have an option of adding hashtags and location-based geotags to each of their posts to make it visible to the people using the same tags within INSTA. Each user post is visible to their follower on their INSTA feeds. There is also an option in the privacy setting to make your profile private so that only their followers and friends can view their posts.

People can share photos on single or many other social media sites like Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook. INSTA users can also like, comment on, and bookmark others’ posts like other social platforms. They also have an option Instagram Direct feature to send private messages to their friends.

INSTA is for fun only but also for business purposes. It offers companies and brands a golden opportunity to promote their brand and products using a business account. They have access to free engagement and impression metrics to maintain their ads campaign. According to research, more than 1 million advertising companies worldwide use Instagram to drive business results by sharing their stories and photos. In addition, 60% of people say they discover new products through INSTA.

History of Instagram

Instagram is driven by “instant camera” and “telegram.” INSTA was first developed in San Francisco by Mike Krieger and Kevin Systrom. They initially tried creating a platform similar to Foursquare but turned their attention exclusively to photo sharing.

INSTA was released for iOS on October 6, 2010, and on April 3, 2012, for Android. After two years of launch, its popularity skyrocketed because it reached more than 40 million active users. This is why Facebook officially purchased INSTA for $1 billion in 2012.

In the beginning, the user had the option of uploading photos only. But in 2013, the company added an option of uploading 15-second videos, which was then increased to 60 seconds in 2016. Until 2015, users could only upload a photo of a square aspect ratio. Later the company changed this to allow users to upload photos and videos at full size.

As of April 2017, the company had almost 700 million active users, more than twice that of Twitter’s total user base.

Editing Tools and Filters

Instagram has a lot of digital filters that users can apply to their photos, including ones that add a vintage or faded look. Other editing features include Lux, which lightens shadows, darkens highlights, and increases contrast. Users can adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, sharpness, structure, straightness, and tint by using Photo-tuning tools. Users can also add a manual tilt-shift and vignette effect to photos.

Post multiple photos or videos at once!

In 2017, INSTA added an option that allows users to post multiple photos or videos at once, presented in a carousel format, which proved beneficial for many people because now they can upload a series of their pictures or videos in a single frame. Even it proved useful for the business owner because they can upload different product variations.

Adding stories to the Timeline.

Being inspired by Snapchat in 2016, INSTA introduced a Stories feature that allows users to share beautiful moments from their day that disappear after 24 hours. INSTA Stories contain stickers and reality-based face filters, text, emojis, drawings, links, and geotags that can be added directly to the photo or video. In April 2017, INSTA Stories reached 200 million active users, surpassing its biggest competitor Snapchat.

Add-on apps:

Instagram also introduced a series of add-on apps. These apps are much more than a Boomerang; they can create custom GIFs; Hyper lapse, Layout, image collages with multiple images, time-lapse videos. After installation, users can access these apps in the INSTA app directly.

How to set up a profile and use Instagram

The Insta app is available for download on Apple Store for iPhone, iPad, and other iOS devices and Google Play for Android devices.

After installation, users can create their INSTA profiles by signing in. They will provide an email, choose a user name and strong password, or log in using their Facebook account.

Home Tab Option

When the app is opened, the first screen that appears is the home tab. In the beginning, the newsfeed is empty as the user starts following friends or popular stars on Instagram. Later they can view photos from accounts they follow. It is similar to the Facebook newsfeed. At the top of the Home feed, users can see the Insta stories in circular profile photos.

Explore Tab

Members can use explore tab to search for their friend accounts to follow or photos by typing hashtags or geotags. The Explore tab automatically presents recommendations and curated content completely based on the user’s activity and accounts they follow. There is another tab named the聽Activity tab, which displays recent engagement on posts in likes and comments.

Profile Tab

The user can view all their photos and videos and a short bio in their profile. To post an image or video, Users need to click the Camera — which will give the option of capturing a photo or video or choosing a photo or video from the device’s library.
